Part II – Compare and contrasting Mainstream and Ethnic Newspapers

Although considered to be a dying medium, newspapers, continue to enlighten billions of individuals every single day. People gravitate towards newspapers because of their aspects of relevancy, convenience, and wide array of information. There are thousands of newspapers in the world; and their sole mission is to connect relevant information to a pertinent audience.

Through thorough research, we come to conclude that newspapers often mirror the culture in which it’s content is directed. A newspaper such as USA Today; clones the ideology of the classic “united” American citizen. A person who frequently reads USA Today wants to keep up with the pulse of the whole nation.  An individual reading the Korean Times closely connects with the individualistic tendencies of the Korean culture. Most of the Korean Times articles are focused on achievements or failures of a specific individual. A newspaper such as the Brazilian Voice is geared toward issues affecting the advancement of the Brazilian people; with critical topics like immigration, education, and family values. Therefore with further analysis of the similarities and differences between these three different newspapers, we are able to formulate the logic behind their style of reporting and see what essentially is “newsworthy” in different cultures.

Mainstream and ethnic newspapers have a plethora of topics from which they are able to choose and share with the public. However, if it is a mainstream national newspaper such as USA Today, it has to sometimes refrain from centralizing specific topics from pertaining to certain areas. Meaning the relevancy of the topic has to appeal to the nation, not just an ethnic culture. Yes, as an American we have our own culture but one of our characteristics that better describes the United States of America is its cultural diversity. The nation consists of communities from different ethnicities. It appears that each newspaper names the audience they cater to. If we as readers look at a newspaper, we can identify most newspapers’ categories, which range from national, international, life, technology, money, sports, travel, and opinion; just like most media. However with these categories come subsections, which allow the reader to get more in depth news about their category/topic of interest. Subsections in both mainstream and ethnic newspapers are what set apart the distinction of news in different cultures. In the order they are delivered, categories and subsections show what is newsworthy to these newspapers.

For example, when examining the three newspapers, it is evident that each of their categories are similar; news being the main one and their subsections varying from local to national and international as mentioned previously. For the three newspapers, what interested me was their style of reporting on sports. Since a sport is a subject that is discussed all year round, I wanted to see what each newspaper deemed as relevant in the category of sports. The Brazilian Voice focused on updates on Brazilian athletes similar to the Korean Times, which focused on updates on Asian athletes and sports/sporting events popular in the Asian culture. Of course USA Today focused on sports that are currently in season as oppose to big sporting events like the World Cup or Olympics which both ethnic newspapers thoroughly touched based on. Both ethnic newspapers felt only the achievements of the popular sports, sport events and athletes affiliated with their culture were newsworthy not so much the losses. It was apparent that USA Today had a heavy emphasis on reporting sports due to their wide array of stories from athletes’ personal lives to what team was winning the playoffs. For example, I began to notice not only with their sports stories but also with most of their stories they reported with various angles on specific topics. When they chose to report on a rape case that occurred on a college campus titled, “New assault claim surfaces in Vanderbilt rape case” under the sports section. Instead of referring to those students as students and leaving the story to be categorized under regular news, they led the story with sharing how the students were football players, already integrating and relating the subject to sports. Although they were not focusing on the game but rather those who played it, showed their idea of sports being newsworthy with the range of controversies athletes may face.

Overall USA Today displayed consistency with their reporting on various subjects. It was evident they wanted to inform the viewers of what was going on in the US, but also kept in mind what appealed to the audience which they felt was sports and national news. The only way they placed a heavy emphasis on international news was if the international somehow interconnected with the nation.

Furthermore, I took a close look at the categories in one specific newspaper and noticed a difference. The Brazilian Voice, an ethnic newspaper had subsections specifically on the Brazilian community of New Jersey, immigrants, local news, USA, Sports, Arts & Entertainment, Culinary World and Humor. Each of their stories somehow referred back to their Brazilian culture and how it affected them. They didn’t focus on what surrounded the people of New Jersey, but more so what affected the Brazilian community in New Jersey as well as what was happening internationally in Brazil. In some cases if an incident occurred where an individual happened to be of Brazilian descent in NJ, he or she would immediately be considered newsworthy to this newspaper. For example, one story, which reported a male being hit by a truck in NJ; titled, “Authorities were still investigating the death of Brazilian hit on Route 287” proves that. Most of the titles, as far as reporting local news, featured the word Brazilian, but for national news reports, most featured the word “immigrant or immigration”; solely reporting on issues that affected immigrants and would contribute to their advancement in society. The Brazilian Voice’s main emphasis is to keep the Brazilian people relevant in a community made up of different ethnicities, showcase their advancement, as well as inform those of Brazilian descent of what’s going on in their country. Instead of putting a heavier emphasis on local as opposed to national and international, they created evenness between the three.

As I went further into my analysis, I begin to realize that relevancy and proximity played a major role in the reporting of all the selected newspapers. Considering that the newspapers all featured international news, I wanted to see in particular how the ethnic newspapers reported on Ebola, a worldwide issue. I came across the Brazilian Voice news article, which immediately shown which audience they were trying to reach out to: the people of New Jersey obviously. In translation the article titled, “Newark airport is able to identify passengers with Ebola virus”. How relevant is this story to the Brazilian Voice? Well, the answer is obvious. Because it can affect the Brazilian community in New Jersey, I mean after all they are not immune to it. The proximity influenced the relevancy of this article. But when reading the article, there wasn’t much detail on the Newark airport, but I believed the author of this article chose to use this title because they knew it would grab the attention of a daily reader.

However, The Korean Times, seemed to report on the issue in way that didn’t gravitate to Koreans per say. Instead they chose to include this story under the opinion section just like most of their stories that were dealing with international matters. So I questioned, why wasn’t it under the category labeled world? It was apparent that since the proximity of the issue hasn’t exactly affected Korea, they felt its relevancy wasn’t high enough to be reported with urgency. The newspaper not only refrained from being bias but it also refrained from bringing fear into a nation as we can see by its title, which translated to, “Ebola: Don’t be scared. Be careful”. Informing the people of Korea of the worldwide disease was their goal to avoid obliviousness of the matter, although an opinionated piece.

On a wider spectrum, The Korean Times emphasized on issues that affected their nation. They briefly discussed subjects dealing with money and technology. But the national stories were the ones reported with urgency and were also longer. Their stories had a very large emphasis on inter-Korean affairs. Although I thought the circumstances of these affairs would leave room for bias favoring one Korea over the other when reporting between South and North Korea; I saw a neutral take on the matters. For example, one of the stories headlines translating to, “Seoul unlikely to accept NK’s inter-Korean unification formula” they discussed both sides of the “two Koreas” possibly uniting. They reported the facts and refrained from including any opinions as well as any negative characteristics that the two Koreas may possibly have.

All in all, after analyzing these three newspapers, we can conclude although each newspaper had its differences and similarities, it is the style of delivery, and the order in which they deliver their stories that differentiate themselves from one another. However, the main similarity that all of them shared was that they knew their audience well enough to know what they would want to read. USA Today appealing to the American citizen, The Brazilian Voice appealing to the Brazilian population in New Jersey, and at last The Korea Times, appealing to the Koreans that make up the nation as a whole. I believe that these three newspapers can learn the importance of acknowledgement as well as urgency. For example, I think USA Today can learn to acknowledge the different types of ethnicities in various communities from time to time like The Brazilian Voice practiced. The Brazilian voice can learn to report relevant matters with urgency like USA Today practices. As for the Korean Times, they can learn the importance of finding a balance. It seemed as if the only stories being reported by the Korean Times were the ones focusing on the issues between North and South Korea. Although it does affect the people of Korea, I believe they should take into account to want to report on various subjects and not label them under opinions to show consistency.

Assignment Pat II

Newspapers are a primary source of information in the global community. Since its beginning, newspapers have overcome many changes and a lot of challenges within the cyber era. It overcame the advent of the radio, the television and the revolution of the Internet. Newspapers are composed of a printed publication issued daily or weekly containing news, articles, advertisements, and correspondence. However, there is a variety of newspapers’ circulation according the community that it serves. For example, the United States has more than a thousand newspapers targeted to different audiences because of its multicultural population. The circulations include local newspapers, national and regional; for different readers and demographic audiences. The publications consist of general news (local and international), political news, business news, regional news, entrainment news, group-oriented news (health, fashion, science, technology), crime reporting, and sensationalism. In contrast, most of these publications are edited differently, but all of them share the same principle, to inform a determined community. For this, I decided to analyze three different newspapers; La Repubblica, El Diario and the Daily News, newspapers that serve a demographic audience into the New York City community.

Although, the cyber era has closed some newspapers’ circulations, the Daily News, EL Diario la Prensa and La Repubblica have survived the technological advances because of its format, its content, its circulation and the print quality that characterize its pages.  These newspapers have their tabloid format and their daily circulations in common.  However, what makes those newspapers differ from one another is their audience and news concentration. LaRepubblica is a local Italian newspaper that aims to inform the Italian community in New York City with general Italian news. El Diario La Prensa, is a newspaper dedicated to the Hispanic community in New York City and the Daily News is a local U.S. newspaper serving the local communities with the most important news in the national scope. The Daily News is one of the most read local newspapers and one of the oldest local newspaper in circulation. It serves the community in different areas of interest, sport, politics, entertainment, economics and media. This newspaper is one of the first newspapers who published tabloid news, one of the few publishing on Sundays and one of the few local complete newspapers. When I point out complete, I mean that it serves the purpose of delivering the information to the readers.  The Daily News provides fair and detailed information, which fulfill the local community that it serves.

The Daily news editions allure the readers because of its variety.  In News Is A Verb, Pete Hamill points out what makes the Daily News to be what it is, a complete and trustworthy local newspaper chosen by many New Yorkers. Hamill stated that what makes a newspaper survive in this era is to recognize change; change in social attitudes, change in ethnic composition, changes in the way women and men work for a living, dress or fall in love (38p).  He points this out because if an editor does not recognize change, the newspaper will be dull, antique and uninteresting for its readers.  The New York Daily News has innovated with the years. Despite The Daily news being tabloid newspaper, which promotes more sensationalized and entertainment news than politics oriented news, it serves its audience and keep the reader interested with their entertainment reporting. But also, it is informative, innovative; it is split in different sections, which can be kindly read by women and men. Furthermore, it is relevant to the community because it offers a wide coverage about the topics of interest in the local community. For example, the Isis issues and the NFL players’ cases of abuse which have been covered very closely by The Daily News journalists. Through the years, it has improved in printing quality, which has made advertising companies opt for its pages when it comes to advertise on print. In contrast, El Diario La Prensa a tabloid newspaper too, has remained for a century serving the Spanish against all odds. El Diario, also called “El Campeon de los Hispanos or The Hispanic Champion,” is a newspaper that covers national and international news, but it was first intended to empathized with Latin American news.  Now it covers more national news of Hispanic interest. This ethnic newspaper is very small. It only has 60 pages, but it is very complete. It is very condensed but still has different sections that fulfill its informative purpose. El Diario has something in particular that I have not seen in the Daily News or La Repubblica. It considers its women readers in a remarkable way making the newspaper prevail in the Hispanic women community. I was amazed when I saw a small magazine call Vista, which is women-oriented and it seems to empower women with different themes. In News is A Verb, Hamill stayed “ To be separated from the readership by class and geography leads to two kinds of missed opportunities, one is journalistic and the other is for business growth, and one of the opportunities to growth is found among the women readers (40p).” This means that El Diario is going with the change in printing press.

On the other hand, there is La Repubblica an Italian newspaper that contains more political news and sports than entertainment. It is left-political centered and it provides the reader with plenty of Italian political information. Also, it has a great coverage of sports. This could say a lot about the Italian community, they love sports and politics. Here, I scarcely see a small section for women; this may be a male-oriented newspaper. Furthermore, this newspaper is well known among the Italians for criticizing the Catholic Church and the left wing in the political scope. La Repubblica has modernized its pages. Now they are more colorful, which makes the paper edition attract their readers in a platform besides their online version. Despite that this newspaper circulation is not as old as the newspaper mentioned above; it has kept its edition in the market since its creation in 1976.

La Repubblica should learn from the Daily News and El Diario la Prensa about their technique in retaining their readers. The fact that LaRepubblica is Politics oriented makes the edition poor in dynamic and not updated with the “change”. It is not that the newspaper should change its format, but it should include more entertainment or article for women. This way, the newspaper will have a bigger scope and it will be more competent at the same time. To make a reader read a newspaper instead of going online to look for news, is a big challenge for today’s newspapers. If an edition is boring, or too serious, or it is lacking in topics of women interest, it probably will not remain in today’s industry, the industry of technology and printing changes.

In addition, the Daily News should learn from El Diario La Prensa, how specific this newspaper is in terms of women interest. It is not that the Daily News does not have a section dedicated to women, but it is all over in the newspaper. If the Daily News organized a women oriented section that would increase their sales, making the newspaper more competitive in the local market. They used to have a woman oriented section on the Thursday edition, but I don’t see it anymore. Also, the Daily News should learn from La Reppublica to cover more news of political interest, for example topics regarding immigration, education and community decisions, this would also increase its Hispanic readers and would have a major scope in two communities; the one that speaks English and other languages, and the one that speaks only English. It is noteworthy that El Diario should learn from the Daily and La Repubblica as well. El Diario La Prensa is very condensed and has more entertainment news than any other news. In the national spectrum, El Diario contains only a few pages, the rest is opinion and entertainment. A little bit more of news would not harm its circulations. Change can means different things, attitudes, beauty, technology, but information about the public interest, including topics of national and international interest will never be displace by the changes that society is experiencing. On the contrary, the information can be tell and portray in a different format with more details.

What it is true is that these newspapers are very relevant for the community they serve. They may need to learn from one another’s editorial format, but they share common characteristics that keep them in the market; to inform, to educate and to entertain the readers. They have prevailed besides technology, they have overcome the challenges television and radio represents for them.  Some newspapers circulations are closed others were about to close, others have been involved in veracity issues, but the truth is that they will prevail for many more years. Even in this era, printing press is necessary for future generations.

Assignment #1 Part #2

Assignment # 1 PART 2

Society has been surrounded by the media for many years. The media exists worldwide and in every language spoken around the world since its main purpose is to keep people informed about current news around them and the world. Not only to inform, but the media has also some other purposes as for example, advertise, entertain, educate, sell, influence and engage its large audience. All of these things are transmitted in many different accessible ways to everyone, for instance by television, radio, internet, magazines, newspapers, etc., but newspapers are one of the most common media nowadays since it is a daily printed publication that can be bought almost everywhere, delivered door to door and even online. Newspapers also divided into different sections such as weather and forecasts, sports, health, comics/humor, showbiz, opinion, politics, entertainment, fashion, business, education, and of course ads for cars’ dealers, TV shows,  homes, pets, medical and legal services, stores, announcements and tons more are all over these. Overall, readers can increase their knowledge in every of these aspects by reading all these different types of information presented in a daily or weekly newspaper.

Many countries such as The United States are very diverse, so therefore these have two different types of newspapers, ethnic and mainstream. Ethnic newspapers focused on local but mainlyon international news for immigrants, racial, ethnic and linguistic minorities residing in many different countries outside of their home country and which are written in their native language(s). On the other hand, the mainstream newspapers focused mainly on local and national news, but also covers international information if it is relevant to the country itself. In addition, both mainstream and ethnic newspapers want their reader to feel comfortable reading the information that they are interested in and in their first language or the one they understand the most.States, cities and neighborhoods across the country are very multi-ethnic, which means that publications on all and each of these newspapers need to be carefully edited since no everyone is interested in reading about the same thing, as an extreme example of diversity we have New York. Also, their pricesare affordable and range from no cost/free up to $6.00 depending on the type of newspaper and the days these are bought. Also exists the online subscriptions, where there is a monthly fee to be paid to have access to read their publications as often as there are published and to the readers convenience.

The ethnic newspapers seem to be a media that mostly focus on reporting information of interest to minority groups, in this case Hispanics. On the other hand, the mainstream newspaper does not report news for a specific ethnic group, but acknowledge all their audience as a whole by reporting local and national rather than global news. Mainstream and ethnic newspapers are set up differently and provide information according to the group they have as their readers. Each newspapers’ sections such as news, jobs, entertainment, etc. emphasizes on their own community’s interest. One of the most curios similarities that these newspapers have is the fact that they know what their audience or reader want to read and know about each topic.

I have chosen three different newspapers, NY Daily News, El Especialito and El Diario, written in two languages English and Spanish respectively. Two of these newspapers are divided into almost the same sections, but one of thesethree newspapersis much less informative than the other two. The NY Daily Newspaper reports news, politics, sports, entertainment, opinion, living and autos while El Diario has three more sections which are immigration, international news andeducation. El Especialito has less section than the other two just mention, and also the information it contains, in my opinion, is not to keep the audience informed, but to give advises as of how to lose weight, save money, have a better life style and of course to target them with their many exaggerated ads.

The audience targeted by these newspapers will not only see news of their interest but also, in some way, persuasive ads in most of the sections of it taking up small or significant portions of its pages. Apart from addressing relevant news and entertain, the ethnic group focused and the general public newspapers generally make sure that their customers are introduced to outside businesses that could assist them with different goods and services according to their needs. One other things is that some newspapers, in this case “Daily News”, also bring a page full of discount coupons for their customer to redeem.By comparing these three newspapers, I did notice that “El Especialito”, which is a free newspaper, bombards their readers with too many ads covering most of its pages compare to the other two. Also as I mentioned before, “El Especialito” publications were not about politics, social news, immigration, etc, which are publications that specifically address most readers’ interest regardless of their ethnicity, but these are about health, beauty and money tips instead.

So now through my comparative analysis, I notice that the coverage to certain topics such as politics and sport in the NY Daily News and El Diario are more extended and more emphasis is put on these compared to the other section of it. El Diario newspaper has agreat distribution of its different sections for its Hispanic audience that want to know about trending news in their native countriesto continue connected even long after they have moved away. Basically the content of this newspaper provides them with an abstract of the most important news of the country they live in and the one where they come from, keeping them linked to both.“After a study, three newspapers tended to cast their own community in a positive light” (Lindgren 2013), this was a finding that caught my attention the most because the audience not only wants to be seen or knownfor good things, but they also want to be aware of things that might affect them or their status in a foreign country at some point. It is important for them to know could stop them from advancing or move forward in this country. This “El Diario” newspapers has a very interesting classified section which highlights jobs, their descriptions and if whether or not the English language is a must, but the showbiz section needs better focused on Hispanic famous people, which will be of most interest or more meaningful to its Hispanic audience.

On the other hand, I notice that the NY Daily News does not cover much information of interest to any specific ethnic group, which I thinks is biased. It is understandable that this is a mainstream newspaper therefore it covers information of interest to the general public, but being that this is a newspaper published in New York it must partially address information for immigrants/non-citizen in general. The following quote better explains that a mainstream newspaper can no ignore the different ethnic groups when publishing news ,especially in the United States, “Communicator need to understand the identifying characteristics and media preferences of various audience segments so that they can better adapt message content to the needs of their particular audience” (Bearden, J. E., & Durand., 1978). The mainstream and the ethnic newspapers surely need to work together for better coverage depending on the location these are published. The general public has to be studied and their needs and/or interests have to be understood so that the printing results meaningful to them.

It is interesting how sports are presented in these mainstream and ethnic newspapers. This section in both newspapers cover statistical reports explaining where each team is standing at. People who might not even feel interested in sports, just by overviewing the statistical report can feel attracted to read it. Also, mainstream and ethnic newspapers are correlated and in need of each other somehow, for instance the New York Fashion Week which is supposed to be a mainstream coverage was published in the ethnic newspaper because of the collaboration of Hispanic designersin this event, whose work were shown in this New York show.Even though this show is not related to the Hispanic population, it was still covered because of the work put into it by Hispanics. In such a diverse country like the United States, mainstream and ethnic newspapers cannot overlook each other. In fact they need to work together to better satisfy and better provide relevant information not only to one targeted ethnic group but to the public in general.

Written Post

I reviewed the content in the newspapers, The Washington Post, The Irish Echo, and El Diario La Prensa. The Washington Post is a mainstream newspaper catering to the American public, while the The Irish Echo and El Diario La Prensa are ethnic newspapers catering to the Irish and Hispanic populations in the United States. Despite their apparent differences, all three of the newspapers report some similar content while remaining true to their intended audiences. The newspapers can learn to report information through different lenses other than the one of the intended audience in order to give their audience a full understanding of the topics discussed. The newspapers can also learn to represent the views of the other newspapers’ catered audiences (The Washington Post, The Irish Echo & El Diario La Prensa).

The Washington Post puts greater emphasis on national news relating to US politics, unlike the other two newspapers. However, the newspaper (Post) does have a significant amount of articles about international and local politics too. The newspaper (Post) puts an equal emphasis on sports and entertainment; with each topic having their own section. Since The Washington Post is published in Washington DC, the newspaper has a particular bias towards Washington DC sports teams, unlike the other newspapers. For example, in the National Football Leagues’ section, there is a particular focus on The Washington Redskins. The entertainment section is different from El Diario La Prensas’ in that it has a focus on academic forms of artistic expression, such a museums section and a literary section. However, the main difference that is evident between The Washington Post and El Diario La Prensa’s entertainment sections is that El Diario La Prensa focuses more on entertainers, whereas The Washington Post focuses more on the actual forms of entertainment, such as Television or Music. The Washington Post’s entertainment section is interesting because it has some unique sections, such as a horoscope section, and a comics’ section. The Washington Post focuses equally on opinion and news articles, however, The Washington Post stands out over the other two newspapers because of its success with investigative reporting. The Washington Post has won many Pulitzer Prizes for its investigative reporting (The Pulitzer Prizes). A reader may choose to read The Washington Post over the other two newspapers because of the newspaper’s success with investigative reporting. A reader may also choose to read The Washington Post over the other two newspapers because the newspaper focuses extensively on international news in a variety of countries, whereas the other two papers focus mostly on international news in Spanish speaking countries or Ireland (The Washington Post, El Diario La Prensa & The Irish Echo).

El Diario La Prensa puts the most emphasis on local news in New York City. Many of local news articles relate to the Hispanic population in some way. Although the paper emphasizes local news, it also has many articles on national and international news. The newspaper is different from the other two newspapers in that many of the international news articles are about Spanish speaking countries. El Diario La Prensa is also different in that it has whole section on immigration. Through viewing the articles in the immigration section, it is clear that the newspaper has a pro-immigration bias. The newspaper also seems to cater more towards new immigrants, than the other two papers. Similarly to The Washington Post, El Diario La Prensa focuses equally on sports and entertainment, with each genre having their own section. However, El Diario La Prensa is interesting in that the paper relates many of the articles in their entertainment section to the Latino population in America. The paper does this by highlighting Latino artists and entertainers in articles about mainstream and Latin American entertainment. The article, “NYFW: Talento latino emergente (NYFW: emerging Latino Talent)” exemplifies how the paper highlights Latino artists, while discussing a mainstream entertainment. The paper covered New York Fashion Week, a mainstream artistic event, in the article. Even though New York Fashion Week was a mainstream event, the paper still related New York Fashion Week to the Hispanic population by highlighting Hispanic fashion designers whose work was presented in the show (Fouilloux, 2014). Even though El Diario La Prensa highlights many Latino entertainers and designers, they also have many articles on American mainstream entertainers and artists too. Since the paper caters to the Hispanic population, many of the articles in the sports section are about sports teams from Spanish speaking countries. El Diario La Prensa is similar to The Irish Echo, in that the paper focuses on the sports teams of the countries that the intended audience’s families originate from. El Diario La Prensa is more interested in news than opinion articles. This is evident through seeing that the paper has a significant amount more news than opinion articles. El Diario La Prensa stands out because the paper is able to report news and relate it to the Hispanic population even if the content doesn’t directly relate to the Hispanic population. The article “Pasan los años pero nunca el dolor por la pérdida el 9/11 (fotos)(Years pass but never the pain of losing the 9/11 (photos)” shows how the paper does just this. The article covered the 13th anniversary of 9/11, and related the anniversary to the Hispanic population by highlighting the stories of Hispanics who were deeply affected by the tragedy (Peralta, 2014). A reader may choose to read El Diario La Prensa over the other two newspapers in order to stay connected to their heritage, either through reading international news about Spanish speaking countries or by reading about news relating to the Hispanic population locally (El Diario La Prensa, The Washington Post & The Irish Echo).

The Irish Echo emphasizes local news in New York City that relates to the Irish population in the United States. An example of a local news article that relates to the Irish population is “Irish gay group vows to continue campaign.” The article covered how the New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee gave permission for a group of homosexuals who work for The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) to march in the parade in 2015 (O’Hanlon, 2014). The Washington Post covered this topic as well with the article, “Gay groups in St. Patrick’s parade all right with N.Y. Cardinal Dolan.” The Washington Post article made it seem that the homosexual group’s ability to march in the parade was a great triumph for the gay community (Gibson, 2014). However, The Irish Echo’s article had a more negative view on the topic. The article explained that the homosexual group feels that their ability to march in the parade was only a minuscule triumph, considering that other Irish homosexual marching groups were not given permission to march in the parade (O’Hanlon, 2014). Similarly to El Diario La Prensa, the international news is about the country that the intended audience originates from, Ireland. The Irish Echo is more interested in sports than entertainment, unlike the other two papers. This is evident through viewing their sections titled “Sport” and “Arts and Leisure.” The “Arts and Leisure” section does not contain any current articles about mainstream or Irish entertainment, the only articles presented are about history. However, in the section titled “Sport” there are more current articles highlighting Irish teams and professional athletes. Similarly to El Diario La Prensa, The Irish Echo is more interested in news articles rather than opinion articles. This is evident through viewing the home page of the paper. The home page emphasizes news articles, while it doesn’t highlight opinion pieces. The Irish Echo is different in the way that it covers culture. The paper tries to connect Irish Americans with Irish cultural events and programs going on in their area. The paper does this by listing Irish cultural events and programs in the “National and Tri-state Events” section. The Irish Echo stands out over the other two papers because of this, and this may cause a reader to read The Irish Echo over the other two papers (The Irish Echo, The Washington Post & El Diario La Prensa).

The newspapers can learn to report information through different lenses. The Washington Post can learn from The Irish Echo that they should represent the views of all of the parties involved. This is evident through reading The Washington Post article “Gay groups in St. Patrick’s parade all right with N.Y. Cardinal Dolan” and The Irish Echo’s article “Irish gay group vows to continue campaign.” In The Irish Echo’s article, the homosexual Irish group’s views on their newfound ability to march in parade were mentioned, whereas in The Washington Post article their views were not mentioned. By mentioning the views of the Irish homosexual marching group, the article would give the reader a clearer understanding on the topic. The Washington Post and The Irish Echo can learn from El Diario La Prensa to show how topics affect different ethnic groups, even if the story doesn’t directly relate to the ethnic group, just like El Diario La Prensa did with the article “Pasan los años pero nunca el dolor por la pérdida el 9/11 (fotos)(Years pass but never the pain of losing the 9/11 (photos)” El Diario and The Irish Echo can learn from The Washington Post that they should include the views of other ethnic groups besides their own in their articles. (The Washington Post, The Irish Echo & El Diario La Prensa). The Washington Post can also learn from El Diario La Prensa to be less biased concerning certain topics. For example, The Washington Post covered the Ebola Virus in the article, “It’s highly unlikely that you’ll become infected with Ebola. So what are you so afraid of?” The article mentioned that there is one person in Dallas, Texas, has the Ebola Virus and that he contracted the virus while he was in Liberia. In the article the author, Ohlheiser stated, that Americans shouldn’t be afraid that they are going to contract the virus from the diseased man because Ebola is only transferred through coming into contact with fluids from the bodies of diseased people and as a result there is no need for hysteria of an outbreak of the virus in America. Ohlheiser then when on to say that it is illogical for Americans to give so much attention and be so concerned about Ebola while they don’t do so for other deadly diseases (Ohlheiser, 2014). El Diario La Prensa covered this topic too with the article, “CDC: caso de ébola en EEUU no es razón para pánico (CDC: Ebola case in USA is no reason to panic).” The article discussed that the that the CDC believes that the man with the Ebola Virus in Dallas, Texas doesn’t pose a threat to the health of Americans because Ebola is only transferred through bodily fluids and because the man was kept in isolation (Peña, 2014). In relation to this topic, The Washington Post should have mimicked El Diario La Prensa’s objectivity, in order to get the true facts across while not minimizing the horror of Ebola (Ohlheiser, 2014 & Peña, 2014).

Society is surrounded by many different languages around the world. These languages have led to new technology for the media today. Media has made a break way for the new generation of people. I have chosen three types of newspapers articles New York Daily, El Pais, and El Diario, written into two types of languages English and Spanish. Two of these newspapers are separated from different sections. They both express ways of setting up their own newspapers. The New York Daily reports news, politics, entertainment, sports, opinions, and etc. Whereas, El Paris reports international news, politics, economic, culture, social events, and sports. On the other hand El, Diario has less subdivisions such as immigration, international news and education. In my opinion, most of the newspapers today are reporting in their own style of entertainment. Both try to report the best news for their own audience. I feel that ethic or more common newspapers, try to report the news to fit the interest of the people, instead of news itself. If newspapers try to report the news instead of trash then we would have a better of society today. We as people would treat people fair and kind instead of the other way around.

Assignment # 1 PART 1

Society has been surrounded by the media for many years. The media exists worldwide and in every language spoken around the world since its main purpose is to keep people informed. I have chosen three different newspapers, NY Daily News, El Especialito and El Diario, written in two languages English and Spanish respectively. Two of these newspapers are divided into almost the same sections, but one of these newspapers is much less informative than the other two. The NY Daily Newspaper reports news, politics, sports, entertainment, opinion, living and autos while El Diario has three more sections, immigration, international news and educacion. El Especialito has less section and the information it contains, in my opinion, is not keep the audience informed of news around them and the world, but to give advises as of how to lose weight, save money, have a better life style and of course to target them with their many exaggerated ads. The ethnic newspapers seem to be a media that mostly focus on reporting information of interest to minority groups, in this case Hispanics. On the other hand, the mainstream newspaper does not report news for a specific ethnic group, but acknowledge all their audience as a whole.

Abstract

I reviewed the content in the mainstream newspaper, The Washington Post, and the two ethnic newspapers, The Irish Echo, and El Diario La Prensa. I choose these specific newspapers because I was interested to see how these newspapers reported news differently depending on their publishing location and audience that they cater to. Each of the newspapers seems to focus on a specific type of news, whether that is local, national or international news. Although these newspapers seem to have their own individual focus, all of the newspapers seem to report similar content, while still catering to their intended audiences. Based on my research, I believe that each of the newspapers can learn to represent some topics through different lenses other than the one of the intended audience. By presenting varied points of view, each of the newspapers can help in giving the reader a greater understanding of the topics discussed.

Abstract

Intro to Multilingual Media – Abstract

Assignment 1

Nowadays technology had given us the opportunity and the advantage to communicate information about what is going on around the word, and our society in a faster, more  efficiently, and I’ll dare to say a bit more accurate way. However, before technology, news paper where the main source of information.  Whenever you wanted to know which were the lotto numbers for that day, which team won the semi-finals, or just wanted to know how violence was affecting the streets of your neighborhood, you made a cup of coffee turn the pages and lost yourself between the lines written on the news paper.  Still, not all news papers are same.  Some are directed to and specific ethical group, some are written in a more professional matter, or seem to get the reader’s attention by exaggerating the story with in the tittles, Ex: “Mermaid Found in Japan”.  Although, this happens often in some news papers, the intention is the same, to inform the reader about what is going on around our country and the word.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify what type of articles a mainstream newspaper publishes compared to local ethnic newspapers. The research will look at the New York Times, El Diario La Prensa and Black Stars News. The New York Times has been published since the 1850s and since then been criticized and measured for their level of biasness yet remains one of the largest circulating news papers in NYC. El Diario has been published since 1963 and has constantly been in transition, the Latino community has been growing and diversifying which has lead the editors to attempt to accommodate and struggle with the direction of the language used as well as the stories covered. The Black Stars News is fairly new and has been published since 1997 their stories take a more social justice perspective as well as provide more cultural and local stories. Although the newspapers have been around for different periods of time they can all gain from each other because they all work out of New York City yet each focus on different stories throughout the city or even around the world. This paper will attempt to identify the type of stories each newspaper focuses on by reviewing their top stories for 2 consecutive weeks. I will compare the different ways the sport, entertainment and politics sections are covered. I will use previous research on these media outlets as well as their own website to compare content.

Abstract

The United States of America is a country filled with an array of diverse languages. My goal is to prove the influence languages have on journalism and the media. Ethnic media impacts demographics and paves a pathway of infused creativity and collaborations. By allowing different individuals to express themselves through their own language we receive insightful information. I will analyze the different styles and writing techniques of the different newspapers. Primarily I will be focusing on El Diario and The New York Times. I will prove how multilingual media also impacts and enriches society. In addition being a bilingual individual, I will argue that both English media and multilingual media compliment one another in the media industry. However, the competiveness will always arise because information will always need to be delivered to the world in the best matter.
