Assignment 2

Advertisements in newspapers still are one of the most effective ways for big companies and corporations to attract attention in order to flourish and become successful. Something that television, internet, radio, and social networks all have in common is that they all offer new choices for advertising, but newspapers still firmly remain the most effective way to reach a local audience. In order for a newspaper ad to be impressive toward a reader, the ad and what it can offer, as well ia show it can benefit people should be clear. Advertisements in newspapers are still to this day one of the most sufficient ways to reach out to a large group of people since it is the most common way that people receive their local news, all the way from purchasing newspapers from a local store or it being delivered to their front lawn. In all major newspapers, especially ones that localize in the city, ads mainly consist of car advertisements, dining & entertainment, home improvement, shopping, and more things like services. The New York Post is an example of a newspaper that advertises all of the above, giving local news of the city and tri state area, as well as incorporating large, as well as small, ads.

When comparing big newspapers like NY Post to an ethnic newspaper like El Diario or India Times, you realize that ethnic newspapers lead toward advertisements about their ethnic communities. Being that El Diario is an ethnic newspaper it does not advertise as much as the New York Post does. . All newspapers are created to attract different audiences, targeting what they believe will sell to the people they are aiming to target. That’s what makes ethnic newspapers attract a certain audience, in this case it is for people who fluently understand and read Spanish. By understanding the advertisements of another newspaper, the India Times, it is clear that it also another example of an ethnic newspaper, seeing that it places ads similarly to El Diaro because they advertise more to the people of their culture. One Ad that stood out to me was at shopping ad for a store called “Top Shop”. Although the newspaper is in English the ads they have tend to attract their people of India, all newspapers have certain sections where they advertise in a way to reach out to all people in order to maximize sales for their companies, even though the way the advertisements and what is advertised may vary from one newspaper to another.

The New York Post is not an average newspaper, for in New York City there are many ethnicities and cultures that blend together to create its diversity, which is why the paper is not an ethnic paper because it will target a small amount of people. The New York Post is a newspaper that advertises to a large scale audience, not specific to any kind of person, only reporting the news and happenings occurring within the area, its popularity gained from its ranges of sections and topics that it covers, from news to entertainment, as well as large scale advertisements. They make sure that the ads they list are clear and interest the consumer. Big businesses and corporations usually take up large ads in popular newspapers, such as the New York Post, advertisements being purchased by large cell phone companies, shopping stores, restaurants for dining, celebrities for entertainment, and many more. The advertisements offer new deals every season and time of year, include bright colors and big letters to catch people’s attention. In the New York Post all of the ads take up about the whole page, this way the readers of the newspaper don’t miss out on what is being advertised. The convenience of all the ads being placed in one area is so that people don’t miss the various of advertisements perhaps targeting what they may need, supplied from wellknown companies like cell phone companies or shopping centers. These companies are usually popular, such as Macy’s that offers more than just a variety of goods and services, constantly offering different promotions to compete with other rising companies. The New York Post is a newspaper primarily created for New Yorkers who are interested in knowing what is occurring in the tristate area, varying from topics that include, the news, business, sports, as well as shopping and entertainment.

El Diario is an ethnic newspaper created from a main audience targeting Hispanic people or those who are interested in the Spanish community. The newspaper is in Spanish, primarily created for those fluent in the language, keeping it more ethnic since it is in a different language. The difference between El Diario and the New York Post is that El Diaro specifically advertises companies or brands that interest the Hispanic community. The newspaper also advertises in a range of colors and big bright letters that stand out in order to attract people, but uses companies mainly used by Hispanic people, a popular food brand using large advertisements being Goya. Goya is a well-known food company that offers Spanish seasonings, Spanish flavored rice, beans, and many other known Hispanic specialties, as advertised in El Diario. This is one of the things that make the advertisements cultural, using something that those people want and creating an ad for it. El Diario also allows readers to be connected to their country and know things going on in the Spanish community, talking and advertising for fashion, healthcare services, real estate, and lawyers for those injured and are not able to speak English. El Diario is an ethnic newspaper that mainly targets one specific audience, such as Hispanic people, advertising to an audience with things that will interest as well as benefit them, which is what makes them one of the many ethnic newspapers out in the world.

India Times is another ethnic newspaper that advertises and reports news just like many other newspapers, but what is unique about this newspaper company is that they it is written in English for the Indian community. The India Times advertises shopping to attract the Indian community to follow trends. The clothes that were advertised are outfits Indians usually wear, which makes it cultural and shows us how this newspaper advertises mainly to their people. It even advertises to wealthier people who have a high class taste for luxury and more expensive clothing, showing expensive clothes and jewelry. India Times also advertises cellphones from different cellphone companies, including large companies such as Samsung and Nokia, which are advertised in Indian currency even though it is written in English. This newspaper also includes lifestyle and health advertisements, showing the good deals in prices they have. Some of their ads are also cultural, keeping the interest of the Indian community. There are also few advertisements that do not just target the Indian people and community, but those few were cell phone ads, as well as health and lifestyle ads.

In conclusion no matter what kind of newspaper anyone is reading whether it tends to be an ethnic newspaper or a newspaper for the city advertisements are a very important factor. Advertisements help big companies and corporations with getting their sales up and they can target different groups of people. Something learned from these three newspapers was that in the NY Post they tend to advertise big companies like Macy’s and the luxury, clothes, watches, jewelry and more they have to offer. These ads target people with a higher income and interest in luxury things, although they have some good sales sometimes the majority of things sold at Macys can be a bit pricey. El Diario and India Times are two other more ethnic newspapers unlike the NY Post these newspapers tend to advertise to a target audience with things involving their culture and what would interest them. Advertisements are important in any type of newspaper and looks like the effectiveness of these ads wont change because it still is one of the most successful ways to reach people everyday.

Abstract 2

Advertisements in newspapers are still to this day one of the most effective ways to reach out to a large group of people. In all major newspapers here in the city some of the main things that tend to be advertised are cars, dining & entertainment, home improvement, shopping, and more things like services. The NY Post is an example of a newspaper that advertises these things. That’s what makes ethnic newspapers attract a certain audience, in this case it is people who understand and can fluently read Spanish. India Times is also another newspaper that is more ethnic and when looking at their advertisements they can be similar to El Diaro because they tend to advertise more to their people. All newspapers have a section where they advertise it is a way of reaching out to the people in order to maximize sales for companies but they way they all advertise and what is advertised tends to change from one newspaper to the other.

Second Assignment – Advertising

As we know newspapers form part of our daily life since they inform us by giving a direct view of the events currently happening in the cultural, social, and political aspect of today’s society. There are many interesting sections within each publisher, from which each offers a different point of view in subjects such as politics, sports, economics, and violence. All of them can provide the reader with an idea of to which kind of public it is intended to, by the way the information is presented, and the type of language is used to describe the event. However, the section within each newspaper that may actually provide you with a bigger picture of to whom its content is directed to, culturally, is the classified section as well as the advertisements all over the pages. Most of the section within each individual newspaper differs on its structure, but uses the same socio-cultural approach to make this section a bit more attractive to the type of reader it is intended.

This socio-cultural approach is reflected on advertisements that populate each and every section of newspapers, some of which belong to business with well-known names such as “Macys”. In the “New York Times”, this name stands up on most of the advertisements on this publisher; it offers goods such as watches, jewelries, luxury clothes from brands such as “Prada” and “Gucci”. Macys, also has advertisements in other newspapers such as the “Dailynews”, and the “New York Post”, however, they are not as well presented in detail to its readers, in both of this newspaper there wasn’t but one ad from Macys which in fact was the someone that shown on the Times for sport clothes. This is one of the clues within the New York times that reflects to whom it is directed to since most of the goods are expensive, which may lead to the conclusion that this ads are directed to the wealthy, business people, with some education, and taste for luxury.

Unlike the “Times”, the “Post” and “Dailynews”, have other type of readers, which is mirror in the way they present the goods as well; both of these publishers, offer their public sales on cars, furniture, home appliances, and perfumes at a price that they can actually afford. Ads from “Models” are shown on both papers in a simpler format, which shows the clothes and its variety in colors as well as the prices, something that isn’t done by the times. It uses color as well to attract the reader’s attention, in contrast to the times, which is all black and white, as a way to show exclusivity and uniqueness of the item in question; both of these papers are intended to a public with same education, with less income, or those within the minority.

Furthermore, another type of advertisement that supports my argument would be entertainment, since each publisher presents announces about, movies and theater. The “Times” for example has a big section of plays, Broadway shows, as well as operas, which in a sense reflects its intention to get the attention of readers with college education that might have been able to develop appreciation for art. The “Times” movie ads section, is smaller since it only shows movies that are base ether real stories, classics, or social issue from which its public can learn more about the subject. In Contrast to the “Times”, the “Post” and “Dailynews” have a wider selection of ads that are within the entertainment category, it has a more extensive movie ads section, as well as ads about night clubs, casinos, and hot lines, which is presented to a more liberal adult public.

Moreover, the “Post” as well as the “Dailynews”, give their biggest clue of to whom their content is directed to, in ads about education. Nurse, and technician certified trainings are offers as a way for the reader to know what options they have to get a better job, get some education, and have a better income, unlike the “Times”, which does not have ads about education, since it is already published for the wealthy and educated. Information from schools such as “APEX” and their financial aid options are a great example of how the Post and the Dailynews intention to reach the minority. Another example would be a single ad about healthcare which is only on the pages of the Dailynews. It shows that this paper, out of the three in question, intents to connect to in a way to accommodate the different cultures, within the minority.

In addition, all three newspapers use a cultural approach to get the public’s attention and in a way allow the reader to see some of their cultural identity illustrated in many of the ads on each publisher. The “Times” , for example as we mentioned, uses colorless pictures to show a bit more of the items uniqueness and elegance, which is mostly use in a business environment, since presentation says a lot about the way that a professional business or wealthy person carry themselves. Ads about clothing brands such as, “Prada”, and “Gucci”, also illustrates how the “Times” tries to make readers from a higher social group feel comfortable while reading a newspaper that understand their way of life and customs. On the contrary, the “Post” and “Dailynews”, uses ads from retail companies such as “Models”, to connect with readers from a lower income group, interested in sports such as “Latinos” and “Afro-Americans”, and example that supports this idea is the way the ad is designed with colorful images, and the price gives a sense of how much the item will cost; unlike “Times”, which assumes the reader is wealthy and does not show a price on the items.

Furthermore, even though each paper has its own type of reader, they all have something in common. The section called “classified” holds may of the similitudes shared by papers analyzed on this essay. This section has jobs openings, services, and even people selling their cars. In the “Times”, however, this section and has only job openings for people with ether college education or some kind of training related to the area of The job opening. On the other hand the “Post”, illustrate general jobs which also offer trainings as well as trainings for people who haven’t finished college, and services such as psychics that relate cultural belief of ethnic groups that are part of the minority. In addition, The “Dailynews”, uses a different approach on this section, even though it has jobs openings, people selling “hot dogs tracks”, and vacation packages. It also, uses the idea of the “American Dream” of owning a house, by having a section called “Home Classified”, which sells houses at a low price, and provides information as well about certified training, that will help readers to get job, and allow them to fulfill this dream.

To conclude, all these newspaper, have different approach to the way the present news to the public, or the advertisements they post on their pages. However, their mission is to make the reader feel welcome and comfortable while they are reading or just looking at different advertisement and the content within them. Some focus on a specific ethnic or social group, which is what really drives them to have a specific format and content within their publications.

Ads, Classifieds, and Culture

Readership alone is not enough for a newspaper to thrive. That’s why newspapers designate a significant amount of pages to ads. Advertisements allow most media outlets to flourish, they provide the funding to allow the exploits of both television, newspapers and films. However, Print Media allows for both Corporate and small businesses to advertise within their outlets, and newspapers are most known for that. Classifieds are one of the oldest forms of advertising, they range from asking for special services (i.e housekeeper or a roommate needed), advertising special services (i.e, massage therapist, real estate)  Although they approach their classifieds differently the The New York Times, The New York Carib News, and American Oggi, they all use advertisements, this they have in common.

The New York Times is one of the best selling newspapers on the globe, with a readership of approximately 31 million people a day. It publishes multiple editions, a New York Edition, a U.S. national edition, A european edition, an Asian edition, as well as an international edition. This will be discussing the New York Edition of the paper. New York is home to a various number of ethnic groups, and the advertisements and classifieds in this paper reflect the variety of the readers of the New York Times.  Their classifieds are numerous and diverse consisting and general as well as multiple corporate advertisements. Their classifieds include lists of job openings, both commercial and residential real estate. A corporate ad that  was featured very prominently was a Macy’s ad for athletic wear that featured the same model found in a Macy’s ad in The New York Carib News. You can see the diversity of the readership through the ads, with an even representation of women, men and people of color and a range of subject matter from cars to exercise.

The New York Carib News serves the Caribbean Diaspora located in New York, reporting on things relevant to Caribbean immigrants and they’re descendants. They do not have a designated section for the classifieds as their They have a number of corporate ads. One particular ad from Macy’s is specifically designed to the racial make-up of the NY Carib News’ readership.  It features a black couple smiling. Another is the for the New York Lottery, which would target the lower middle class and their aspirations of a better life. They also have a number of small business ads that range from hair salons to health drinks. Another notable ad is for the Boston Shipping Enterprise, that specially caters in shipping containers to the Caribbean, this is one of the more targeted ads geared toward Caribbeans in New York. Often Caribbean migrants tend to ship down various necessities down to the caribbean via a barrel.  The New York Carib News has no real classifieds due in part to the lack of need.  Which is surprising due to the substantial size of Caribbean Americans located in New York.  However, those that wish to advertise with the paper simply get a small section in the paper for their ad. However they should consider getting a classified section much like the American Oggi, where Caribbean Americans can benefit from a sense of community, buying and selling from each other.

The American Oggi is an Italian-American newspaper printed in the Italian language, dedicated to the Italian Americans within the New York City Metropolitan area, as well as New Jersey.  Looking through their pages you see an extensive classifieds section that switches to and from Italian and English. It also features advertisements throughout the paper highlighting Italian-American run businesses around the NYC area, much like the same local ads the The New York Carib News displays.  The classified ads much like the New York Times are based on real estate, job openings, etc. Although American Oggi is in Italian, it’s classifieds are a mix of both the Italian and English languages. They are also very culturally specific bordering the stereotypical, the majority of the classifieds ads for help for skilled pizza workers, pizzerias for sale, and restaurants.  There also many advertisements for small italian-american businesses located in both the classifieds and throughout the paper. The paper illustrates just how close knit of a community italian-americans truly are. The classifieds show how they choose to give jobs to their own and keep italian-american run businesses, italian-american run.

In order to finance newspapers fully, the newspaper company has to seek advertisements. The New York Times, The New York Carib News and American Oggi all utilize specific corporate  advertisements targeted at their specific demographics. The use of classifieds and advertisements  become more specific and targeted in cultural newspapers, creating a streamlined audience for corporate ads to reach their target demographics. This creates a more efficient form of advertising and newspapers can boast their efficacy of advertising.

Assignment #2- Advertisment

When we pick up a newspaper to get the latest news occurring in the world, we also find several types of advertisements. Advertisements are a form of marketing communication used to persuade an audience into buying goods or services. Revenues from the sales of advertising pay for the costs of newspaper production. This is why they play an important role in Newspapers. There are two types of newspaper advertising-corporate and classified. However, the advertising is not always the same in all newspapers. Some target certain ethnic groups and translated into other languages as well. For example, El Diario being a Spanish newspaper we find corporate and classified advertisements that relate to the Latino/Hispanic community. We can find advertisements about immigration law firms, and other product and services advertising in Spanish. Also, The Jewish Press contains mostly classified advertisements that attract their religious communities and their people. Whereas, The New York Times contains several different advertisements that does not target any specific ethnic group. For example, Apple is one of the biggest advertising used in New York Times, because it attracts readers of different ethnic groups. Comparing these three different newspapers would give a better understanding on why the reader determines what is being advertised in newspapers.

There are many techniques used in creating corporate advertisements in order to attract a reader’s attention and sell the product. The physical appearance plays a big role. Some aspects consists of size of the ad, color, amount of space, visual images, and the style and size of text. However, the information displayed on these ads are very influential in selling a product. The information need to relate to quality, price and a well description of the product being advertised. Than we have classified ads which are written by individuals wishing to advertise good and services which are mostly grouped together according to their category. Moreover, Newspapers seek for ads that can keep their readers hooked and also bring new readers into buying them.

For instance, looking through El Diario one can see that being a Spanish newspaper, it is important to advertise a product that relates to the Hispanic community, such as, DirecTV and Goya. These Corporate advertisements in El Diario are displayed very colorful, with bold letters and in Spanish. The DirecTV ad offers the Hispanic community more channels in Spanish, and channels from back home (country of origin). “Manten una conexion directa con tu tierra” is a catch phrase they use to persuade the reader that with this service they can be connected to their country. However, classified ads such as; jobs, Real Estate, Autos, Education, Medical and professional services, law, health, fashion, and etc. are mostly printed because they are cheaper. On the front page of El Diario, on the bottom right corner, you see an ad about Gorayeb a law firm targeting those in the Hispanic community who suffer an accident in construction. Also ads about immigration law firms are used constantly throughout every other page. There are also advertisements that are very controversial, for example, ads that offer different places and doctors for abortion, which can be very risky into loosing readers. Overall, for El Diario it is essential to display a variety of advertisements to make their readers feel connected, and for them to keep being a reliable source for their readers.

The New York Times, is very big in corporate advertising. You may find ads from Apple (the new IPhone 6 AND IPhone 6 plus), Forever 21, H&M, Game stop, AT&T, Verizon, Electronics and Automobiles. You can also find a good amount of classified ads same as El Diario, with the only difference that The New York Times now offers wedding directory and camps and schools ads. The New York Times are not so big on making the advertisement look colorful but more interested on how effective the text can be in order to sell. For example, an ad about Apple with their new IPhone 6, the ad is displayed in big and bold texts describing each feature of the phone; which targets groups with high income who can afford one.

On the other hand, The Jewish Press is bigger on classified rather than corporate ads. Because the Jewish Press consists of a number of pages long full of information, they are very organized with how they categorize their classifieds. For example, they have real estate, jobs, business opportunities, autos and personal. You can find anything from open jobs, financial services, and very helpful ads about solutions. For example, Shabbos Lift Solutions ad, which is aimed to attract handicapped individuals in wheelchairs into getting the “stair lift” so they can move up and down their stairs at home. There is also an ad about the Museum of Jewish Heritage and a full page about bibles and religious books. Most of these ads are in Hebrew and in English.

The difference between these newspapers; El Diario, The New York Times and the Jewish Press, is that the Jewish Press ads are more conservative in relation to politics and religion. For example, in their Personal ads El Diario and the New York times can sometimes contain sexually suggestive material. In El Diario, “Avisos Personales” they have information of females of different ethnic groups for individuals interested in meeting them. The words used on their description are very sexual and provocative. The Jewish Press being mostly read by religious readers would not allow ads with those types of sexual content. This is because they already know who their readers are and the kind of services they want to keep offering to them in order to keep being a good source of information. Advertising has a very important position where they deliver the proper message to customers.

These three newspapers have a similar method when it comes to advertising. They choose what to advertise (corporates or classifieds), how they advertise it (appearance and language) and who they advertise it to (target groups). El Diario has all of their ads in Spanish that target specifically the Hispanic community. The Jewish Press consists of both English and Hebrew ads that target the Jewish community. And the New York Times ads are 95% in English and the rest translated into different languages (mostly Spanish, English, Chinese and Hebrew) and targeting the community who are economically “fit.” What I learn from these different newspapers is that the reason why they are still in the market and so popular within their community, is because their readers are happy with what they are being offered. Readers have a huge role in what is being advertised. They help determined how effective certain ads are, that way newspapers know exactly what types of ads to keep bringing back and which new ones to display.

Along the years advertising has become essential in our everyday life. They have invaded almost every aspects of our lives. We see advertising anywhere we go or wherever we are; can be by reading a newspaper, watching TV, hearing the radio, navigating through the web, riding the subway, and even playing a game of candy crush.

Three Newspapers, One Word, Several Meanings….Advertising!!

Currently, advertising has become a crucial component in the media industry. It is one of the main reasons why media has evolved and stayed so strong. Corporations and businesses use advertisements to promote their goods and services. The benefit of print advertising is that the availability of the advertisement is unlimited. Newspapers such as El Diario La Prensa, New York Times and the Daily News have different strategies to advertise to their consumers. Several newspapers offer the same product advertisement but present them in completely different forms. In depth, I will be interpreting and analyzing specific advertisements among the newspapers. Different newspapers offer an array of styles and techniques to cater to certain demographics. However, how does advertising involve society?

Assignment #2 – Abstract 2

Jhelsy Paula
MMJ 211

Assig. #2

Have you ever sat down to analyze how much advertising we are bombarded with every day? On television, radio, Internet, newspapers, everywhere! Throughout the years, this has become as something “normal” and typical of our daily lives. The question is, are the same companies bombarding us? No matter where we go, and what we read, are we going to see the same advertisements over and over? On the following essay, I will discuss different advertisement on three major NYC’s Newspapers from different ethnicities group, El Diario La Prensa, Daily News and Italian Tribune; and how we are being influenced by these ads.

Advertisement is define as a notice or announcement in a public medium promoting a product, service, or event or publicizing a job vacancy; in my opinion, advertisement is 50% of what we see in media, because it is impossible to read “X” news without seeing few ads or watch anything without the reminder about all the sales that are going on in the market, which you don’t want to miss out on. With this assignment, I was able to see the different types of advertising going on with NYC’s main ethnic newspapers. They all have their difference; and due to the variety of audience, there were only few times where their advertising was the same or similar.

El Diario la Prensa:

During my research on El Diario La Prensa, I noticed that it was the one out of all with the most advertising. One of the things that this newspaper has the most is about immigration and malpractice, in which consisted of seven to ten advertising companies on their daily newspapers. You would see more of these types of ads on weekdays (Mondays-Wednesdays) than the other days. Also, I saw a lot of Health Plans’ companies having full pages showcasing Affinity, Fidelys and Metroplus. They had also advertising for Shipping and Traveling agencies, medical related ads, Spanish channels (Telemundo and Dominican local channel) promoting their shows and few well-known supermarkets.

Classified Section: On their classified section, two full pages were dedicated to job opportunities. On the other page, it had a section for school and different courses and a section promoting local law offices.

Sports Section: On the sports section, it only had to ads of DIRECTV and Lincoln Car Company, which I believe is because this section is mostly target to men, and they don’t shop as much as women do and they only place those ads that were going to be effective to men.

Online: For the online version of this newspaper, compared to the ads on the hard copy of the El Diario, it has nothing at all; the most visible ones are from Chevrolet, which is all over the main page, and NBA ads that pops out as soon as you enter the page.

As you can see, the amount of advertising on El Diario La Prensa is very high. I was surprised because, as a usual reader, I really didn’t notice how much ads were being introduced to me. That’s what I think happens to a lot of us, ads becomes so typical that we know they are there but don’t really notice.

The Daily News:

While reading “The Daily News,” you will see ads from very well known companies and institutions, such as Macys, Fidelis Health Plan, Metropolitan College and well-known supermarkets. They also have electronics ads and little real estate ads. When buying this newspaper, you will also receive a 19 page Auto section with the newspaper, these 19 pages is all about different car companies promoting their services, which neither “El Diario” or the Italian Tribune have. In this newspaper ad, I also found on few of their editions’ ads to Hispanic radio station 93.1 Amor. On the sports section, there were no ads at all, which was a bit surprising.

Classified Section: The classified section for this newspaper is just two pages long, in which consist of three sections. The first small section dedicated to jobs search and other two small sections titled “Career” and “Real Estate.”

Online: For the online version of “The Daily News,” there were three main ads, all very local oriented: Metropolitan College, Healthcare and local bank. Not too much, and all of them separated.

The Italian Tribune:

The Italian Tribune is the one that has the least ads out of the three newspapers I choose. Their ads consist of Wine companies, Lawyer’s firms, and Italian Restaurants. As I mention on my first assignment, this newspaper is very cultural oriented; this can even be seen on their ads, where everything they promoted is Italian.

While reviewing and analyzing the advertising of these three major newspapers, I was able to determine a lot of things that I didn’t notice before, especially all ads that are part of the newspaper and we are so used to ads that our brain automatically makes them invisible to our eyes. Two of the companies that I saw on two newspapers, “El Diario” and “The Daily News,” were Fidelis and Chevrolet. In “El Diario,” the presence of Chevrolet was very noticeable on their online version of their newspaper. While on “The Daily News,” there was a small section of this company promoting its services. For Fidelis Health Plan, I noticed something very curious; on both newspapers, they were located on the same page, but targeted different audiences. For “The Daily news,” the ad was targeting older people (couples) and saying how important is Health Care as a senior. While “El Diario,” it was more family oriented, using the picture of a mother with her daughter.

Something that caught my attention a lot was how “The Daily News” had an ad for a Hispanic radio station. However, “El Diario” didn’t have any type of ad promoting one of the many Hispanic radio stations that exists in NYC. It also surprised me how none of the newspapers I picked had ads for bigger very well known company such as JCPenney, Apple, Ford, McDonald’s, etc.

For all of the newspapers, the classified section includes mostly the same, job opportunities, schools, small business etc.

It is impossible not to see the difference on advertising depending on the culture of each newspaper. Each one of them adjusts their ads depending on the needs of the readers. On none of the other newspapers except for The Italian Tribune included a wine ads; the same way “El Diario” is the only one with a lot of lawyers that concentrate on immigration and malpractice in construction. So companies are not paying just to put their companies out there, but they are paying to have the attention of certain type of audience.

None of the ads that I saw were translated, they might have been of the same company, but targeting different audiences.

The only difference on the layout of the advertising generic for three newspapers I will say is the amount and organization. For the Italian Tribune, you only get to see very few ads here in there; most of them located in the same place. For “El Diario,” which is the one that has the most ads, they even have an ad on the front page of the newspaper, as well on the first pages of this newspaper. While for “The Daily News,” the ads are located more towards the middle of the newspaper.

I think, as Multimedia Students, we should all be able to detect or at least be more aware of what it’s being presented to us. Through this assignment, I was able to see how amazing is the variation on ads depending on what audience is being targeted. The three newspapers that I chose do not only have different ads, but they have different ways of presenting their content depending on the ethnicity groups of their readers.

Abstract #2:

On my last assignment, I have decided to pick a regional newspaper, national newspaper and ethnic newspaper, which allowed me to study the type of news that was being presented to each audience. For this project, I decided to pick a new newspaper, dropping the national newspaper “USA Today.” I went with The Daily News, a regional NYC newspaper. The reason for this is because I believe it will be better to compare 3 regional newspaper with different ethnicity backgrounds and audiences to study in a wider scale the advertising techniques of each one of them.

These are the newspapers that I will be using:

• El Diario la Prensa

• The Italian Tribune

• The Daily News

Assignment # 2 – Advertising

Advertisements are a form of marketing communication and surrounds our daily lives. Advertisement is way to persuade and manipulate an audience. An advertisement goal is to sell and make money. In newspapers you can find at least one advertisement in each page. There are advertisements for products, services, food, apartments, clothing and jobs etc. Every newspaper has a different type of advertisement. I will be comparing three newspapers and the types of advertisements each use. The three newspapers are The New York Daily News, El Diario and India Times. All three newspapers have different advertisement because they each have a different audience.

The New York Daily News has numerous of ads. You can find ads while reading the paper online or print. While reading the paper online I found ads for cars such as Volvo, Honda, Ford and Mitsubishi etc. If you were to click on the ad it shows you the nearest car dealership near you. It also shows how much you can lease a car for if you give certain amount of a down payment. Emblem health is a health insurance provided for New Yorkers. There was an ad of Emblem Health on the Daily News website. This ad will only be advertised in NYC because the health insurance is only for those who live in NYC. I did notice for every individual column I pick there was ad related to the topic. For insistence, I click the column for sports and on the side of screen there was an ad for Nike and Modells. The ads are not translated in foreign language. I don’t think there is any cultural in The New York Daily News. The New York Daily News is a very broad newspaper. Advertisements online are very modern is like watching a short clip on the side of your screen. It has ads for the print version and online version.

For the print version majority of the ads are on the last few pages. While on the other hand online ads are modern. There were advertisements on the print version about Apple. The ads were promoting iPhone 6 and 6 plus. Companies such as T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T also promoted Apple products. I saw an ad of T-Mobile promoting the iPhone 6. You don’t have to give anything upfront, but you can break the phone cost into monthly payments. Movies ads as well as movies listing were on the paper. The types of ad they have are for the movies that will premiere. I also saw advertisements for apartments and houses. It has a listing of majority of the areas in New York such as Bronx, Brooklyn, queens, Manhattan and long island.

El Diario has different types of ads. El Diario is a Spanish written newspapers for those who live in New York. El Diario has many ads related to immigration. For insistence it has ads about lawyers that deal with immigration. I also saw ads about vehicles such as Chevy, Honda and Toyota. What I found interested is that you can translate the article to what best accommodates you. However the ads don’t translate it stays in Spanish. I also saw an ad for horoscopes. All of the ads are in Spanish. El Diario also has ads for traveling with different airlines such as Ameri-Jet etc. I found the ad interesting because it only promotes Spanish-speaking countries. On the print version you can find a lot of coupons for Macys, Jcpenny, Best Buy etc. Most of the ads in El Diario are very family oriented and many of the ads are about related to family. There were advertisements about hospital such as Montefiore. Majority of the ads published in El Diario is for Hispanic community.

India Times has different types of advertisement compared to The New York Daily News and El Diario. The website has different ads like where you can travel to and find a job. The types of jobs listed are for big cooperation such as HP, Dell, and Samsung etc. As for the travel section it has different promotions for instance things that a traveler should do that they don’t. It’s also different because they don’t pop up on the side of your screen like the other two newspapers. There were advertisements for cellphone nokia and the for company apple. It might be because it a different cultural than the other two newspaper. The types of ads India Times are more of promotions. The promotions and advertisements are written in English.

All three newspapers advertise their advertisements differently. El Diario has all of there ads in Spanish since it’s a Hispanic newspaper. It’s also more of a family oriented newspaper so majority of the ads have images of families. The New York Daily has an ad almost in every page. It also promotes mostly anything from cars, technology, companies etc. As for India express there ads are promotions rather than an advertisement. What I learned from all three newspapers is that each company has its own unique way of advertising. However, they all have one goal in mind, and that is to persuade and make money. The New York Daily News and El Diario have a section where you can pay and have your ad published on newspapers. You can find this option online. However, India Times does not allow readers to publish their ads on the website.

Advertisement is part of our daily lives. When we least expect it we are being expose to one. Advertisements are everywhere newspaper, streets, driving public transportation, online and commercials. It is something we cant avoid. I’ve learned that advertisements can be differently depending who you trying to target. Every advertisement has a different goal and audience.

assignment #2

Advertisement is an essential part of a newspaper. It has the ability to get to numerous amounts of people. Newspapers frequently have a section that advertises different kinds of products and services. There are corporate parts that usually involve vast production such as phone, automobiles, computers, and fast food restaurants. The New York Times is a huge example of this. The New York Times typically advertises large corporations. Yet, El Diario advertises small commerce, technology, and products that can produce to the Hispanic community. This means that more of advertisement is in Spanish, in order to focus on ethic groups. Also, the Wall Street Journal draws more businesses and economics. Consequently, the New York Times is broader and aims for a larger group of people.  Hence, advertisements are an enormous portion of newspapers. This implies that it has the ability to communicate to different types of ethic groups, social media, and businesses quickly.

The Wall Street Journal has an importance on business and economic news. Their organization involves the following companies such as Barron’s, Marketwatch, and All Things Digital. Some of their ads relate to its aim for the newspaper. It’s a great way to demonstrate the kinds business they operate with.   When I was researching, I realized that an online ad vs. the printed ads wasn’t different. After I went to visit the Wall Street Journal website, the ads were distracting and diverting the whole purpose to visit the website. Some of the ads were like Phone carriers, for instance AT&T, or T-Mobile. I do understand that most of as is to generate income. That’s the whole purpose to have ads is to promote money. Which goes to the point of economics is about promoting products to get backmoney. So this implies that ads would get the attention from the news and make reader spend more time on buying.

Therefore, the company gets a win situation for getting a profit of business. On the other hand, the printed news newspaper is different. The ads that are place inside the articles are near the right or left side of the article. This means that the attention of the ads is not taken away for the news. It might encourage the reader to take a glance, but doesn’t make a huge distraction.

El Diario is a newspaper that has a source for news and information. This newspaper is accessible in both online and print. This newspaper is more for Hispanics in the New York locations. It is categorized by having advertisement portions involving automotive, real estate, family, and employment. It is similar to the Wall Street Journal. Most of these ads are in Spanish and for the ones who are online is translated to both English and Spanish. The advertisement is more into marketing strategies to promote money.   I think the marketing is to focus on local news compare to internationals news.   Some of the advertisement seems to be concern on beauty, sports, and entertainment. I also witness some of the ads were distracting, similar to the Wall Street Journal.   It just seemed to me that everything is about producing a profit. I think society has made people who are delivering the news, forget about the reason why the news exist. I think that advertisement is great way to market a business, but should not take the focus on the main issue.

Yet, the New York Times produce ads that can deliver communication to areas of minority, urban and youth, and the multicultural markets. It has a variance of a little of everything for everyone. This means that the ads are not distracting. Its ads is to market a person health, finance, and education. The New York Times have ads to suggest better ways to fix a person retirement plan. This is very helpful for people to have their family be aware or improving their economics status. I think ads should allow people to be inform of what is going on inside a community. This can help newspaper increase their market sell, either on print ads and online ads. Newspapers should let their readers learn something new about themselves first. I agree with this because people can always buy a product, but what is the main reason that he or she is buying the product in the first place. The answer is to find out better information for the client.

Overall, the culture of each newspaper is separated by mainstream news and traditional news. The Wall Street Journal was more about corporate, business, technology, and economic news. This newspaper was focus on providing people information about revenue and business. El Diario was more about ethic culture. This newspaper was about generating an audience that was focus on ethic culture and its own Spanish heritage. Lastly the New York Times, had a traditional approach of news, but had ethic way of bringing the news too. Therefore, news is way to market a product and to help learn news ideas for the customers.

Second Essay: Ads and Classified Section

Laura Pozo

Aside from informing readers of the most recent, influent and important news happening in their community and/or worldwide, newspapers also let their large audience know about many companies offering goods, services and jobs that might be of their interest. Advertisements are found from the beginning to the end of each newspaper in almost every shape, color and size which could cover a small portion or even a full page of it. To advertise what needs to be sold; companies use their most effective advertising methods and techniques to persuade the audience to consume all their “provocative sales, of products and services”. As far as the classified section of newspapers, this have many jobs’ positions available for the public in different business, properties for rent or sale, pets, professional services, career training schools, car and phone companies, etc. Advertisings and especially the classified section in newspapers are to offer opportunities to the readers on the daily basis and at an affordable cost.

Newspaper advertising seem to be very effective since these can surprisingly turn luxuries into necessities with their well designed, colorful, easy to understand and engaging messages and designs. Noticeably, most of the ads do not say everything that the reader wants to know, but just enough to attract them and have them want to know more about what is trying to be sold. Readers usually look forward to ads in newspapers because of the convenient shopping information provided in this very common type of media. Ads provide them with detailed information, high contrast images, provocative offers, and of course convincing descriptions that may lead people to think that they must take advantage right away before the “unbeatable sales are gone”.

Ads found in The Daily News and El Dario newspapers are all about cars’ dealers, TV shows, homes, pets, medical and legal services, clothing, and phone stores, spiritual services, travel agencies, cab companies, the lottery, colleges, beauty school and downloadable apps for smart devices, basically a combination of small and . It is interesting how these ads are spread out and also organized depending on the topic discussed throughout all and each of its pages. Articles are of great support to the ads. Both of these, ads and articles, are somehow related to each other. As for example, in the immigration section of El Diario newspaper; there was this article about immigrants’ vote specifically Latino/Hispanic vote and their calling for an immigration reform and surprisingly there was also an ad about immigration lawyers in New York offering their services at the bottom of the same page. Another example was in the Digital section of the same newspaper, where there was an article about the things that should be taken in consideration to choose the right and most convenient digital reader and underneath there was an advertising article about the “great deals” that amazon.com has to offer. As proven with the provided examples, ads and articles in each section of the newspapers try to manipulate the readers enticing consumerism.

On the other hand, The Chief newspapers has fewer, but more interesting ads than The Daily News and El Diario newspapers. This does not advertise for retail stores, supermarkets, phone or car companies, and miscellaneous, but instead the small-sized ads found in The Chief newspaper are about universities, educational training institutions, legal services, investments, and real state. It seems to be a more educated and/or professional newspaper that advertises with its main purpose of benefiting readers by providing them economic and educational opportunities that can improve their status in our community. Its content in general is about relevant and well-explained business, economy and social related news instead of gossips or irrelevant information.

By comparing these three newspapers, The Chief, Daily News and El Dario, I have noticed that all three have a wide array of advertisements offering many diverse services and goods from stores like Macy’s, AT&T, T-Mobile, Direct TV, Verizon, supermarkets such as Associated, Bravo, Fine&Fare, CTownTown, jewelry stores etc. Except for Macy’s, I did not find any big or well-known company advertising their goods in any of these newspapers. In my perception, The Daily News and El Diario newspapers’ ads are purposely to aim urban communities offering them every day or common needed services and products. These two advertise goods and services of small business, provide discount coupons inside the newspaper as a “gift” to their customers for the purchase of products and/or services in businesses such as supermarkets, and also these newspapers’ prices are lower compared to The Chief which could be because of their common and less informative local and dramatic news and gossips. Based on this analysis, I came to the conclusion that the ads in these two newspapers are to satisfy the urban lifestyle of our community and not to help them to improve intellectually, professionally and economically.

The classified section of not only these but every newspaper is a brief but very descriptive section where people can search for jobs, investments, real state, and selling and buying opportunities in their area and in which there is different choices to choose from. In all of these three newspapers, the tracking information in every classified post is very valuable and specific since it is the only way to follow up with the different businesses. The requirements and contact information provided make it easy for the readers to know immediately whether or not they can be considered for the job position they are interested in, or rent/buy a place where they would like to live and or do business, and even tell them the prices so that the ones interested can analyze prices and see if it is affordable to them before inquiring. Based on my findings, the Daily News and El Diario have a larger classified section compared to The Chief newspaper. I did noticed that the jobs opportunities in El Diario and The Daily News are basic jobs positions as for example; cookers, bakery attendants, barbers, home attendants, cab drivers, receptionist for travel agencies, warehouse helper, delivery personnel, etc. In comparison to the Chief newspaper, the jobs are for people with an advanced education and a certain time of experience, as for example; investigators, truck drivers, bus and trains mechanical supervisors, retirement benefit examiner, paramedic, etc. Also, it is worth mentioning that even though the pay is not mention in any of these post, it is obvious that the jobs offers in The Chief newspaper will be better paid.

In the Spanish newspaper, ads and the classified sections are all written in Spanish unlike the English newspaper where some of these are written in English and some few in Spanish. Certainly, there is a mix of languages in these two offering and engaging sections. Something that caught my attention was the fact that some of the job positions in the classified section of the Hispanic newspaper did not required or preferred being bilingual. I believe that if it is a Hispanic newspaper, it must be necessary that the job seeker knows English and Spanish, but not only English. But also, each type of newspaper have its own audience and are the ones who better know them, therefore I assume they know what to advertise and also what to add in the classified section according to their readers’ needs and wants. The classified section is well organized with small tittles that let the reader know which column is for jobs, investments, real state, professional services, etc., so that readers can easily find what is of their interest.

According to Betancourt, “The idea of advertising is to attract people to the site or store and when you get them there, make it really easy to do business. It is like any good commerce.” Ads have their own purpose, which is to persuade customers and entice or convince them to consume their products and/or services. Professional like Betancourt know how to approach, and convince their thousands of readers with their “popping ads” to consume and get a rapid response. Also newspaper advertising seems to be more affordable, of less cost, than TV or radio advertising, and also more accessible to people who spend most of their time outside of their homes. Also I, as a customer, would trust more a newspaper ad than the ones seen in TV or in the radio because usually in these other two forms of advertising the customers are not told everything about the sale or will show them but in very small letter that are impossible to be read in those flashy commercials.

I personally believe that ads are very attracting and manipulative that sometimes can get people to think that they need what these are trying to sell, and therefore we end up buying. Also coupons for certain stores are very attracting since is always great to save some dollar when purchasing. The classified section is very interesting and well organized, but I personally believe that the more expensive the newspaper is, the more chances of finding better paid jobs and business opportunities. It is always great to invest in an informative and full of good opportunities newspaper.
